Last Breath or Your Guide to the Alexander Technique

Last Breath: Cautionary Tales from the Limits of Human Endurance

Author: Peter Stark

A fascinating blend of adventure and science, LAST BREATH recreates in heart-stopping detail what happens to our bodies and minds in the perilous last moments of life when an extreme adventure goes awry.

With a growing number of people setting out to climb snow-capped mountains, swim choppy seas, and hike through dark, dense jungles, extreme deaths and brushes with death seem to have become everyday occurences. A compelling synthesis of science, history, possibility, and prevention, LAST BREATH examines the physiological, psychological, and emotional stages our bodies and minds endure at the brink of death. Listeners will shiver with a man lost in snowy woods, suffering from
hypthermia, as he tears off his clothes, burning up from cold. They will hallucinate with a young woman as she succumbs to a cerebral edema stranded at the top of Anapurna. And while a kayaker tumbles helpless underwater for 2 minutes, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, listeners too will gasp for their last breath.

Jan Chapman - VOYA

This breathtaking collection of eleven adrenaline-charged tales of survival will grab a reader's interest until the very last page. Stark, a contributor to Outside magazine, presents harrowing accounts of extreme sports enthusiasts who battle for their lives when their daredevil efforts to push the envelope go awry. Each tale combines a suspenseful narrative of the events that plunge the victim into disaster along with the clinical and physiological details of how the body attempts to preserve life. The book also provides insight into why some are drawn to the high risk of extreme sports such as rock climbing and scuba diving. Readers will hold their breath as a snowboarder, buried under an avalanche, fights to maintain calm and preserve his last precious minutes of air. Not all of these accounts end happily; in one, a doomed kayaker tumbles endlessly in a remorseless, churning white-water hole, unable to find a way out. This collection will appeal to older teens who enjoy adventure and survival stories, such as Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer (Villard, 1997) and The Perfect Storm by Sebastian Junger (W. W. Norton, 2000). The stories are based upon Stark's interviews with accident survivors. It is a wonderful recommendation for reluctant readers, combining the intensity of true-life nonfiction with a suspenseful, well-told story. The next time a bored sports or adventure fan eyes the fiction collection with a jaded eye, pull this one off the shelf. Source Notes. School Library Journal

Adult/High School-A fascinating look at how individuals can face death in the course of adventure and daring. Each of the 11 chapters is a separate saga of a fictitious character in a life-threatening situation. Scenarios include hypothermia, drowning while kayaking on a treacherous Chinese river, suffocation by avalanche, and heatstroke in a competitive bike race. Other dangers include altitude sickness, scurvy, falling, jellyfish stings, the bends, malaria, and dehydration. As readers begin each story, they have no way of knowing whether or not the character will survive. The physiological details of the body's attempts to endure, the psychological changes that occur as death is faced, and the serendipity that allows one to live and another to die all make for an engrossing book. Stark has a clear way of imparting a lot of detail. He describes the intricacies involved in each sport, the biological details of the body's response, and the nuances of the character's personality within the few pages. Each story is compelling and the mystery of the outcome holds readers' attention.-Carol DeAngelo, Kings Park Library, Burke, VA Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Book review: Nudge or The Ten Roads to Riches

Your Guide to the Alexander Technique

Author: John Gray

The Alexander Technique is a proven process of mind and body reeducation that reduces stress and muscle tension, and revitalization those who practice it. Used by many actors, athletes, and dancers, the technique can help anyone increase his or her energy and achieve a more dynamic presence.

Written by a veteran instructor of the Alexander Technique, this authentic and easy-to-follow guide allows everyone to learn the increasingly popular program, with clear instructions for each exercise, and dozens of helpful photographs that show correct and incorrect positions to use for the exercises and throughout the day.

Library Journal

After acknowledging that there already are numerous books on the Alexander Technique, Gray, a British former actor and current teacher of the technique, has written still another, designed to take the mystery out of the subject. Although wordy at times, his book is reasonably clear, with each chapter discussing the theory behind the technique and giving specific exercises the reader can do on his or her own. The content is very similar to Sarah Barker's The Alexander Technique: Learning to Use Your Body for Total Energy ( LJ 1/91) and Judith Leibowitz and Bill Connington's The Alexander Technique ( LJ 7/90). Libraries that already have these two titles, which are aimed at an American audience, do not need to consider Gray's, which is more British oriented. Recommended for libraries where there is an extensive demand for books on this subject or where copies disappear quickly.-- Natalie Kupferberg, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., New York

Heal Your Heart: How You Can Prevent or Reverse Heart Disease

    Author: K Lance Gould

Dr. Gould describes how the heart works and how cardiovascular disease develops and progresses. He introduces readers to new non-invasive medical imaging technologies such as cardiac PET that may potentially provide early diagnoses for people who may be at risk. Extensive scientific references at the end of the book document Dr. Gould's conclusions. Dr. Gould demonstrates how patients and physicians can work together to conquer one of the relentless causes of disability and death. He explains what questions to ask medical staff and how to manage your own reversal program including your doctors, whether specialists or general practitioners. He also advises which cholesterol-lowering medications are safe and effective and when they should be prescribed. This reversal program may replace surgical or catheter procedures for treating cardiovascular disease in most patients. In some specific cases, some people may also need balloon dilation or bypass surgery. Dr. Gould furnishes the criteria used to identify the minority of patients who need them. For this minority, Dr. Gould's reversal program in addition to surgical treatment will provide optimal outcome by dramatically lowering the further risk. For most people, this program produces a sense of well-being and reduces or eliminates symptoms.

Dr. Gould is a pioneer of cardiovascular medicine who discovered fundamental concepts about the pathophysiology of coronary artery stenosis. His ideas have been ten to fifteen years ahead of their time. They now comprise our current knowledge of the pressure flow dynamics of coronary artery setnoses. The breadth of Dr. Gould's knowledge is astonishing: from theoretical fluid dynamics and experimental coronary physiology to clinical pathophysiology, form positron emission imaging and quantitative coronary angiography to medical economics and office practice of reversing heart disease- each step is innovative, logical, and carefully validated, and crosses subspecialty boundaries. Lance Gould has had not one but several great ideas, and the intellect, courage, and tenacity to validate them from concept to clinical application. —Ward Casscells, M.D., UT-Houston Medical School and Hermann Hospital, and James T. Willerson, M.D., UT-Houston Medical School, and editor, Circulation

    Library Journal

Here, two cardiologists analyze current treatment strategies for heart disease and offer prescriptions for improving heart health. In Heal Your Heart, an authority on coronary artery narrowing advocates early diagnosis to minimize risk, a very low-fat diet, moderate exercise, and the use of cholesterol-lowering drugs. Unfortunately, the many current references to the clinical literature with which Gould supports his regimen require considerable effort to locate and then interpret. His recommendation of reducing daily consumption of dietary fat to no more than ten percent of calories is significantly lower than what is currently recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the National Cholesterol Education Program. In addition, the text could have benefited from the inclusion of tables and illustrations more accessible to a general audience. Nevertheless, his book is a worthwhile selection because it provides the sophisticated lay reader with detailed information on how the heart functions and the cause and course of atherosclerosis (coronary artery narrowing) as well as a program for taking control of heart disease that can be modified to suit a wide variety of needs. Recommended for large consumer health collections. Living Longer with Heart Disease poses more questions than it ultimately answers. Authored by the director of the Noninvasive Heart Center, San Diego, it largely serves to question traditional medical practice and much of the current medical establishment, leaving the reader stuck in a maze of medical confusion. For example, Wayne's discussion of the "Cholesterol Myth" may well lead readers to conclude that taking a "statin" (a specific class of drug designed to lower cholesterol levels) may be medically unnecessary. While blaming the pharmaceutical industry's greed for spawning a deceptive mass-marketing campaign concerning the drug's benefits, Wayne fails to inform readers about current AHA guidelines for prescribing these drugs, which clearly state the medical necessity for such therapy as well as recommended dosages and adverse effects. Given Wayne's failure to provide consumers with clear and impartial answers to their medical questions, this book is not recommended.--Gail Hendler, New York Acad. of Medicine

Cool Hip and Sober or Perimenopause 2d

Cool, Hip, and Sober: 88 Ways to Beat Booze and Drugs

Author: Bill H Manvill

In a refreshingly clear-headed and informed approach to addiction, Bill Manville, noted writer and radio host of the popular talk show "Addictions and Answers," has compiled a list of 88 questions and answers from, "a ton of plain and fancy drunks and dopers" and their family and friends. Cool, Hip, and Sober offers valuable advice and information from his guests: noted psychiatrists, psychologists, rehab counselors, MDs, academics and more.
Here, in first-person detail, are responses to the issues faced by alcoholics, addicts, and their loved ones, such as:
* How can I stop for good today?
* How can I tell if someone I love will relapse?
* Alcholism . . . addiction . . . and sex
* Do interventions really work? And how do I set up one?
* How do I find the best rehab for me?
*The many faces of denial
* Is alcoholism inherited?
* And much, much more . . .

A brave, transformational look at the treatment of chemical dependency, Cool, Hip & Sober is a captivating, insightful and essential handbook for overcoming denial and achieving a peaceful, long-term recovery.

Library Journal

Manville, a California-based radio show host, journalist, and rehab clinic volunteer, drew 88 questions from his program and provides answers based on research, expert opinion, and his own experience as a long-term recovering addict. Readers are instructed to consult sections of the book that concern their stage of substance abuse, from ambivalence about its costs/benefits to the recovery phase, and the questions are colorfully labeled to address specific problems (e.g., tests for assessing whether one is an alcoholic and choosing a rehabilitation program). Heavily grounded in Alcoholics Anonymous theory and a belief in a broadly defined higher power, the book successfully straddles the polar views of alcoholism as a disease and as a character defect. It also concisely presents the latest medications and common techniques for dealing with related problems, but fundamentally it is intended as a tool of encouragement and inspiration; readers seeking more in-depth information may need to go beyond the few listed web sites. Though the information is basic, Manville's presentation is attention-getting, and his message is delivered in a heartfelt manner. Recommended for personal collections and specialized collections on addiction.-Antoinette Brinkman, M.L.S., Evansville, IN Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Just Love Me: My Life Turned Upside-Down by Alzheimer's

Author: Jeanne L Le

Just Love Me reveals the thoughts and emotions of a woman struggling with a suddenly unmanageable life; numerous hospitalizations, suicide attempts, everyday turmoil, and finally, the arduous search for an accurate diagnosis of the illness responsible for it all: Alzheimer's disease (AD). This account is unique in that most books on the subject of Alzheimer's are written by a carepartner or medical professional. There are very few books actually written by a person living with the disease, and Just Love Me should be required reading for anyone who has any contact with a person afflicted with AD. This book is especially helpful for anyone related by birth, marriage, friendship, or those people who have a professional relationship with Alzheimer's sufferers. Jeanne Lee's very personal, frank description of her life experiences before, approaching, and during the early stages of AD enables readers to better understand the disease from the inside out; a view not often seen by non-sufferers. By getting inside the mind of the author and experiencing with her the worries and frustrations that constantly torment her, the symptoms of AD become less enigmatic for the reader.

Book review: Explaining Long Term Economic Change or SELECT Series

Faith Healers

Author: James Randi

In this book, James Randi, internationally known as a magician and investigator of claims of alleged paranormal abilities, has compiled a strong indictment of such charlatans. It is a story of deception and greed on the part of many "healers" and evidence of the gullibility and misplaced faith of their victims. Astonishingly clever tricks used by some of the subjects of this book are revealed for the first time, and these disclosures are supported by strong evidence gathered by Randi and a team of colleagues over four years of careful investigation.

The Faith-Healers lays bare the practices of leading televangelists--among them Peter Popoff, W. V. Grant, Pat Robertson, and Oral Roberts--and other so-called "healers." In this expose, Randi stands up for the millions of believers who continue to be victimized and makes a strong case for legal action to end the chicanery.

Toronto Sun

A fascinating look at a world of misplaced faith and blind trust that seems more appropriate to the Dark Ages than to the end of the 20th century.

School Library Journal

YA Are there people chosen by God to heal bodily ailments through the power of prayer alone? Randi's answer is ``maybe,'' but on the basis of his three-year investigation into faith heal ers, he hasn't found any evidence of it and suggests it may be nothing more than a religious con game. The author, a professional magician, has made it a sideline to expose fraud and miscon ceptions in the realm of the paranormal. Leading evangelists such as Oral Rob erts, Peter Popoff, W. V. Grant, Pat Robertson, and others are all shown to use tactics that are at best misleading, to guide the faithful into believing that they have been supernaturally cured by prayer alone. At worst, some of these men are shown to be cynical frauds preying on the desperation of the seri ously ill. The book is not tightly writ ten, but it can be read for enlighten ment. The Gabriel Method or Bald

The Gabriel Method: The Revolutionary DIET-FREE Way to Totally Transform Your Body

Author: Jon Gabriel

The pile of recent dieting books is growing faster than the average American's waistline. From the well-known programs that deprive and restrict to ones that rely on juice alone, it seems that everybody has an answer to the growing problem of obesity.

When Jon Gabriel's life took an unexpected turn, he suddenly was awakened to the marvelous gift that he had been given — the opportunity to live — and was disgusted at how he had treated his body. At over four hundred pounds, walking, sleeping, and working was a struggle against gravity, and his life was a constant battle between emotional and physical satiation. He was slowly killing himself with food.

Like the estimated 58 percent of Americans, and rising numbers in other countries, Jon was trapped in what he came to call the FAT - Famine and Temperature - trap. By studying biochemistry, Gabriel learned that your body has an internal logic that determines how fat or thin you will be at any given time. The way to lose weight is not to struggle or to force yourself to lose weight but to understand this internal logic and work with it so that your body wants to be thinner. When your body wants to be thinner, weight loss is inevitable and becomes automatic and effortless. You simply crave less food, you crave healthier foods, your metabolism speeds up and you become very efficient at burning fat, just like a naturally thin person. And that's the real transformation — to transform yourself into a naturally thin person, so that you can eat whatever you want whenever you want and still be thin, fit, and vibrantly healthy.

After reading The Gabriel Method, you will learn:

  • Your body has a reason whyit's holding on to weight—and it's not your fault.
  • Fat is a cushion—a protective barrier that our mind believes is helping to protect us.
  • If you can change that belief, you can change your body; Stop the cycle of crash dieting and start eating what you want, when you want it.
  • How to choose healthy, nutritious foods that nourish the cells in your body, not starve them.
  • Delicious shakes and smoothies, and super-power supplements, that can jump start your success.
  • The simple way you can train your mind and body to work with your goal of health, not against it.
  • Eliminate the emotional and mental reasons your body holds on to weight in just 10 minutes a day.
  • It certainly worked for Jon; he lost 225 pounds in two-and-a-half years, going from 409 pounds to 184, without suffering, dieting, or anguishing over his body. Unlike most people who lose an extensive amount of weight, his skin tightened up and now is indistinguishable from that of a person who has been healthy his whole life.

Bald!: From Hairless Heroes to Comic Combovers

    Author: Kevin Baldwin

It’s the perfect antidote to Bloomsbury’s hit hair trilogy, Bad Hair, Big Hair, and The Mullet: Kevin Baldwin’s comprehensive book on the history and nature of baldness.

Bald! takes us into the world of those whose heads are covered by more air than hair. Entertaining but also extensively researched, Bald! examines the cultural and sociological history of baldness—its varied significance (from wisdom to impending misfortune), the oddball theories on its cause (from too much cycling to excessive sex), and its outrageous “cures” (from rubbing the scalp with bat milk to the more extreme measure of castration). Baldwin goes on to tackle the finer points of drugs, plugs, snake-oil miracle cures, the pluses and perils of rugs and combovers, and psychological tricks for overcoming the stigma. Complete with a hairless history of the world and notes on shining contemporary examples, from Julius Caesar to Michael Jordan, Bald! is a fantastic tour through a subject that’s anything but barren.

Living Longer Depression Free or The Mitzvah of Healing

Living Longer Depression Free: A Family Guide to Recognizing, Treating, and Preventing Depression in Later Life

    Author: Mark D Miller

Depression affects people of all ages, but is both more common and more serious for those over sixty. As many as half of all nursing home residents have depression, as do up to 40 percent of those who visit primary care clinics. Late-life depression is a disease with unique risk factors. Health problems, physical limitations, the loss of loved ones, and fears about financial issues all contribute to an increased incidence of depression, which, despite its prevalence, is not a normal part of the aging process. It can intensify existing medical conditions such as chronic pain and is far more likely to lead to suicide than does depression in younger people. There is good news, however: 80 percent of older people who receive treatment for depression make a complete recovery and enjoy fulfilling lives.

In Living Longer Depression Free, Mark D. Miller, M.D., and Charles F. Reynolds III, M.D., draw on their considerable experience in geriatric psychiatry to help elderly persons, their families, and their physicians accurately diagnose and treat late-life depression. This comprehensive, up-to-date guide begins with a discussion of the different types of depression, their causes, and symptoms. The authors then describe how doctors evaluate depression; present the treatment options available to patients today, including psychotherapy, medication, and alternative treatments; and offer strategies for achieving long-term mental health. Each chapter opens with a list of frequently asked questions and uses case studies to personalize the information provided, and the book closes with a useful list of resources for further information, including hotlines and websites.

Compassionateand accessible, Living Longer Depression Free is an invaluable guide for older people and their families striving to overcome this debilitating disease and prevent its recurrence.

    Library Journal

Both geriatric psychiatrists at the Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic, Miller and Reynolds here share their 20-plus years' experience of working with older people suffering from depression. As the authors remind readers, the incidence of depression significantly rises with age, and suicide, highly associated with depression, is five times more common in later life. This important, thorough work covers the various forms of and medical reasons for depression and how it's related to Alzheimer's and other diseases; reviews how to evaluate and treat depression, including medication and psychotherapy; and presents numerous strategies for staying free of depression for the long term. The helpful appendix contains hotline numbers of organizations that focus on depression and URLs related to depression and late-life issues. Though several works for health professionals contain similar information, this is the first book to address lay readers. Strongly recommended.-Dale Farris, Groves, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Miller and Reynolds (both: psychiatry, U. of Pittsburgh) offer non-professionals a framework within which to understand depression in later life. Though the incidence of depression among seniors is high and growing, they say it is highly treatable, with full recovery in over 80% of elders who receive adequate treatment. Annotation c. Body for Life: 12 Weeks to Mental and Physical Strength

    Author: Bill Phillips

Step into any gym in America, mention the name Bill Phillips, and watch the faces light up with recognition and respect.

    These include:

Hundreds of thousands of men and women who turn to Phillips's monthly magazine, Muscle Media, for guidance and straight-forward information about exercise, nutrition, and living with strength.

Professional and amateur athletes--among them John Elway, Karl Malone, and Mike Piazza--and celebrities such as Sylvester Stallone, who have relied on Phillips' clear-cut information to enhance their energy and performance.

People once plagued by obesity, alcoholism, and even life-threatening ailments who accepted a personal challenge from Phillips and, with his help, turned their bodies and their lives around.

Body-for-LIFE is much more than a book on physical fitness, it's also an inspiring true story of one man's journey through life and the lives he's touched--a journey that began with a dream of helping one million people rebuild their bodies and has evolved into the challenge of a lifetime, a quest to help people from all walks of life search for, and discover, the hero inside each and every one of us.

Step-by-step, in language that is vivid and down-to-earth, Phillips maps out a guaranteed recipe for success.

This is not a vague, pie-in-the-sky "motivational" book. Neither is it a dense, technical manual about anatomy and physiology. In these pages, you will learn:

    • How to develop the mind-set to cross the abyss between knowledge and action
    • How to create not only more time but more energy in your day
    • How to lose fat and gain muscle by eating more, not less
    • How to trade hours of aerobics for minutes of weight training--with dramatic results
    • How thousands of ordinary people have become extraordinary role models and how you can too

The principles of the Body-for-LIFE program are profoundly simple, but remarkably powerful. So pull out your calendar, mark 12 weeks from today, and allow yourself to experience the power of the information in this book. Then get ready to take your body, and your life, to a higher point than you may have ever dreamed possible.

Change Your Mind--Change Your Body--Change Your Life

Imagine, just 12 weeks from now, having the lean healthy body you've always wanted and not having to turn your life upside-down to get it.

Imagine having the energy to be at your peak from dawn to dusk, having the confidence to do all the things you've been putting off, having the certainty to make the right decision at the right time, knowing that you really do have the power to change--not just your body but anything in this world you set your mind to.

If this sounds unlikely, or even impossible, it's time you were introduced to Bill Phillips and his Body-for-LIFE program--it's time you join the legions of people who have reaped the benefits of his expert advice.

    What People Are Saying

I believe the more his message gets out, the better off everybody's going to be.
    — (John Elway, Two-Time NFL World Champion)

    Fred and Renee Scurti
When we discovered Bill Phillips, we realized we had been confronted with a simple decision, 'Change our lives or dig our own grave with a fork and knife.' After a few weeks on the program, our bodies were changing, but more than that, our relationship, our lives were changing.
    — (Fred and Renee Scurti, ages 38 and 35, Sales Manager and Homemaker; Parker, Colorado)

    Russell Simpson
After completing the 12-week program, I not only achieved my physical goals, I rediscovered passion in my life. This became the primary driving force behind my success. I've become the person I've always wanted to be.
    — (Russell Simpson, M.D., age 47 Physician; Huntsville, Alabama)

    Christy Hammons
When I first read about Bill's program, I felt a sense of hope I hadn't felt before. I was inspired to take the first crucial step--I decided to change. Within weeks, I felt better, I looked better, and people started to notice. After 12 weeks, I lost 30 pounds, 3 inches off my waist, 4 inches off my hips, and dropped 3 sizes. My life couldn't be better. I'm not settling for mediocrity ever again.

    Echinacea: The Genus Echinacea

    Author: He CI Yu

Echinacea has emerged from the realm of folklore medicine and into the territory of valued and potentially fundamental therapy. While an understanding of the promising medicinal applications of Echinacea is important, knowledge of the herb's chemistry, cultivation, and analytical profiles is equally as significant. Echinacea: The genus Echinacea examines every element of the popular herb. Several chapters in this volume deal with the taxonomy, genetics, international culture methods, and chemistry of Echinacea, while other sections focus on the analytical evaluation of the various plant parts, such as the roots, stems, leaves, and flowers. The text explains how the plant is cultivated and describes the locations where it is most abundant. It presents different species of Echinacea that are medically important, and then identifies the chemically active ingredients that give Echinacea its strong pharmaceutical and therapeutic value. The book also includes a discussion of proper medicinal and veterinary uses, as well as guidance on when this remedy should not be used. With comprehensive analysis of this popular herb, this timely book bridges the gap between the abundant molecular cataloguings of the phytochemicals present in genus Echinacea, and the functional potential of this plant. It will be a valuable resource for anyone involved in the fields of plant science, natural products chemistry, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary medicine, and naturopathy.

    • Reduce stress and lower your blood pressure
    • Control your appetite

    • Slow down, and even reverse, osteoporosis
    • Select the best footwear and accessories

Here is a complete program that will bring you a healthier and more satisfying life.

    Publishers Weekly

Beyond a basic agreement about walking as the ideal exercise (it's safe, low-intensity and requires no investment other than a pair of good shoes), the approaches of these two books, both April publications, could hardly be more different. Fenton and Bauer, editors at Walking magazine, offer an encouraging, commonsensical guide to a progressive walking program designed to make even die-hard couch potatoes say, ``I can do this.'' Breezy, two-page chapters-one for each day of the training regime-offer information on such topics as stride, step and pacing and include space for the essential daily log-keeping. The authors' positive approach to walking matches the book's easy-to-follow structure. By contrast, Malkin (Walking-The Pleasure Exercise), a dental surgeon, delineates the ``Malkin Technique'' in an authoritative, nearly pedantic style. He urges a minimum of three 45-minute sessions of brisk (``moderate to hard'') walking per week, offering an eight-week training program toward that goal. Chapters discuss health, weight loss, stretching, equipment and motivation; those dealing with diet include some low-fat recipes. The surfeit of information and the moving focus of attention make for a daunting prospect, a view that could easily spill over to the fitness program Malkin prescribes. (Apr.)

Lisas Story or Can Homosexuality Be Healed

    Lisa's Story: The Other Shoe

    Author: Tom Batiuk

Tom Batiuk spent several years as a middle school art techer before creating the comic strip Funky Winkerbean in 1972. Originally a "gag-a-day" comic that portrayed life in high school, Funky has evolved into a mature series of real-life stories examining such social issues as teen dating abuse, teen pregnancy, teen suicide, violence in schools, the war in the Middle East, alcoholism, divorce, and cancer.

Batiuk, unsure about dealing with the serious subject of cancer on the funny pages, decided to go ahead with the story line. He approached the topic with the idea that mixing humor with serious and real themes heightens the reader's interest. Lisa and husband Les faced the same physical, psychological, and social issues as anyone else dealing with the disease.

Lisa's Story: The Other Shoe is part of the Literature & Medicine Series published by Kent State University Press. Additionally, it contains resource material on breast cancer, including early detection, informtion sources, support systems, and health care.

    Publishers Weekly

Batiuk, creator of the long-lasting Funky Winkerbean comic strip, subjects one of his supporting characters to cancer in this collection of "very special" strips. Lisa and her husband, Les, have a pretty good life in their hometown, until Lisa discovers a lump in her breast. She beats back the cancer once, but when it recurs after remission, she has to prepare for the worst. In the meantime, the son she gave up for adoption eighteen years before finally decides it's time to locate his birth mother. While Batiuk's attempt to take on a difficult, life-changing event should be applauded, trying it in the context of a gag-a-day newspaper strip may not have been the best choice. Batiuk works hard to tell a realistic, engaging story of a woman facing one of life's trials, but the relentless demands of a daily strip-and occasional mugging by the characters-cramps his pacing, forcing him to prolong some vignettes, cut short moments that could have used more room to breathe, and pause every few panels for, if not a joke, then something with a jokelike appearance. Artwise, Batiuk's simplified realism has a good sense of detail in the later strips. (Oct.)

(Oct.)

    Can Homosexuality Be Healed?

    Author: Francis Macnutt

Too often, especially in the church, the subject of homosexuality causes deep misunderstanding and painful rifts. Is it really possible to believe that homosexuals did not choose that lifestyle, and yet maintain biblically that the behavior is sinful? Yes, says author Francis MacNutt, and the prayerful result leads to a new possibility: Jesus Christ can transform the homosexual's orient-ation so that he or she can actually become heterosexual.

The striking clarity and practicality of this book will guide the compassionate reader who feels intuitively (and biblically) that homosexuality is wrong but fears being labeled ignorant or "homophobic." And homosexuals who want to change will find that specific prayer brings extraordinary results.

Spinal Cord Injury and the Family or Mama Sutra

Spinal Cord Injury and the Family: A New Guide

    Author: Michelle Alpert

Spinal cord injury, or SCI, is frequently sudden and unexpected—through accident, disease, or violence, patients temporarily lose control of their bodies and, it seems, their lives. With rehabilitation, they can learn to navigate their world once more, retraining muscles and mind to compensate for paralyzed limbs and diminished strength. But as Dr. Michelle Alpert shows here, there is far more to recapturing full, independent lives than regaining movement. Central to long-term success is mending the family unit.

Combining Dr. Alpert’s clinical experience with patients’ own stories, Spinal Cord Injury and the Family is for individuals and their families who must climb back from injury: for the young quad couple, both quadriplegic, who wish to conceive and raise a child; for the paraplegic dad who wants to teach his daughter to drive; for the couple wondering how they can regain the sexual spark in their relationship.

The authors cover the causes of and prognosis for SCI through case studies, review common courses of rehabilitation, and answer the “what now?” questions—from daily routines to larger issues concerning sex, education and employment, childbearing, and parenting with SCI. Rich in clinical information and practical advice, the book shows how real patients and their families are living full lives after spinal cord injury.

Janet M. Schneider - Library Journal

In 2006, it was estimated that approximately 11,000 Americans sustained traumatic spinal-cord injuries (SCI) each year; that number is much higher now with injured soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Physiatrist Alpert (associate medical director, Fairlawn Rehabilitation Hosp.) has compiled a timely and basic guide for SCI patients and their families, covering a multitude of important issues from basic spine anatomy, how injuries occur, and the impact of the injury's location to the first days after an injury, the emotional turmoil of the patient and family, and adjusting to work or school. Relationship issues, including dating, sex, fertility and pregnancy, and parenting, are painted in reassuring terms. Children with spinal cord injuries garner a separate chapter, as do the medical complications and challenges of SCI. This excellent overview with an emphasis on the physical effects of SCI will be invaluable to a growing, currently underserved audience. Highly recommended.

    Milady's Standard Cosmetology

    Author: Milady

For decades the primary reference for cosmetology licensure, Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology has undergone the most thorough transformation in its history with this new edition. Milady has totally revamped the organization and contents to bring the Standard into the new century. In its contents and art, both of which are new to this edition, the book reflects the changes in salon and spa treatments, procedures, and products. New chapters such as "Life Skills" by Arlene Alpert and "Communicating for Success" by Catherine Frangie start students on the right path, stressing the soft skills that professionals know is the key to success. NAHA award-winner Mary Brunetti also wrote the chapters "Shampooing, Rinsing, and Conditioning" and "Hair Styling." Ruth Roche, another NAHA-award winner, has created a totally new "Haircutting" chapter, complete with step-by-step technicals on the core cuts. The look of the text mirrors the changes in content, with its open feel, contemporary design, and high-quality photography. Having been developed after extensive analysis by educational design experts, the textbook exhibits the most sophisticated methods for relaying information, stimulating thought, aiding comprehension, and enhancing retention. Central to the book's development was the knowledge that learners need to keep engaged through a visual, inviting display when they turn each page, and that steered the direction of the text design and art program.
