Diabetes Cooking for Everyone: 250 All-Natural, Low-Glycemic Recipes to Nourish and Rejuvenate

Author: Carol Gelles

An award-winning cookbook author, professionally trained nutritionist, and type 2 diabetic, Carol Gelles combines gourmet flair with cutting-edge dietary knowledge in this essential, all-in-one diabetes cookbook. All 250 of the recipes in Diabetes Cooking for Everyone accommodate the dietary restrictions that accompany common diabetes complications by providing recipe variations for reducing fat and saturated fat, cholesterol, sodium, protein, or carbohydrates. Plus, each recipe has a GI rating for optimal nutrition and a list of diabetic exchanges to facilitate meal planning. These truly delicious yet easy-to-make dishes address the health needs of everyone with diabetes and nourish the entire family, too.

Publishers Weekly

Gelles, author of 1,000 Vegetarian Recipes (which won an IACP/Julia Child Cookbook Award), has a master's degree in food and nutrition and herself suffers from diabetes. Her knowledge of food, as well as her own experience with this disease, which affects 17 million Americans, enables her to provide nutritionally correct recipes for fellow diabetics. As she points out in her introduction, many patients within this population are faced with additional complications such as heart disease, hypertension and kidney problems; each carefully composed recipe, therefore, addresses the limitations imposed by these conditions. For instance, Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce comes with suggestions for palatably reducing sodium, protein and fat when necessary. Diabetic exchanges are suggested, and menu ideas provided. Readers get a quick nutritional summary with each recipe, and a more complete breakdown at the back of the book. Ingredient lists are short, cooking procedures straightforward, portions small, and flavors satisfying. Creamy Portobello Mushroom Soup, Herbed Veal and Spinach Meat Loaf and Ginger Bread Pudding all prove that despite adherence to strict guidelines, there can still be real "pleasure to be found in eating" for all diabetics. Depression in New Mothers or Hangover Handbook

Depression in New Mothers: Causes, Consequences, and Treatment Alternatives

Author: Kathleen Kendall Tackett

Are you prepared to provide the best possible treatment for new mothers with depression—including those determined to breastfeed?

This book, which completely updates Kathleen Kendall-Tackett's 1993 classic text Postpartum Depression, provides you with a comprehensive approach to treating postpartum depression in an easy-to-use format, including treatment options that are safe for use with breastfeeding mothers. Addressing fatigue, pain, negative birth experiences, infant characteristics, and psychosocial factors, Depression in New Mothers: Causes, Consequences, and Treatment Alternatives presents a vital, cross-cultural view of depression in new mothers that will prove invaluable in treating the mothers who come to you for help.

Depression in New Mothers: Causes, Consequences, and Treatment Alternatives dispels the myths that hinder effective treatment and presents up-to-date information on:

  • the impact of maternal depression on the health of the mother, as well as the health and well-being of the infant
  • conditions that may co-occur with postpartum depression, including anxiety disorders (obsessive compulsive disorder), posttraumatic stress disorder, eating disorders, and substance abuse
  • alternative treatments, including diet, exercise, and omega-3s
  • the role of psychotherapy and community-based programs
  • the use of herbs and psychotropic medications to combat postpartum depression
  • the impact of various treatments on breastfeeding—with treatment options that are safe for women who continue breastfeeding through treatment
From the Foreword, by Jane Honikman, Founding Director of Postpartum Support International, Santa Barbara, California: Dr. Kathleen Kendall-Tackett has been a pioneer educator in the field of maternal mental health since her first book, Postpartum Depression, was published in 1993. In this new volume she expands upon her knowledge of the complexities and interrelationships that exist in the field of maternal depression. Her goal is to equip her readers with the information needed to make a real difference in the lives of mothers and babies. She has achieved this goal through a systematic framework that will help you understand the topic and how to communicate effectively with postpartum mothers.

Depression in New Mothers is truly comprehensive, addressing under-investigated issues, such as negative birth experience, previously untreated trauma, and the impact of infant characteristics such as crying, sleep habits, prematurity, chronic illness, and disability. Each chapter contains summaries of thought-provoking international research studies. The information in this reader-friendly resource can add a vital perspective to advance the way health professionals today—and the health professionals of tomorrow—view and treat postpartum depression.

A Life Worth Living or Testosterone Syndrome

A Life Worth Living: A Doctor's Reflections on Illness in a High-Tech Era

Author: Robert Martensen

Critical illness is a fact of life. Even those of us who enjoy decades of good health are touched by it eventually, either in our own lives or in those of our loved ones. And when this happens, we grapple with serious and often confusing choices about how best to live with our afflictions.  A Life Worth Living is a book for people facing these difficult decisions. Robert Martensen, a physician, historian, and ethicist, draws on decades of experience with patients and friends to explore the life cycle of serious illness, from diagnosis to end of life. He connects personal stories with reflections upon mortality, human agency, and the value of “cutting-edge” technology in caring for the critically ill. Timely questions emerge: To what extent should efforts to extend human life be made? What is the value of nontraditional medical treatment? How has the American health-care system affected treatment of the critically ill? And finally, what are our doctors’ responsibilities to us as patients, and where do those responsibilities end? Using poignant case studies, Martensen demonstrates how we and our loved ones can maintain dignity and resilience in the face of life’s most daunting circumstances.

Publishers Weekly

A physician, medical historian and bioethicist, Martensen pulls no punches: beyond the marvels of modern medical technology "lies a treacherous morass of ethical, moral and spiritual dilemmas most of us are not ready to even consider: whether to opt for aggressive treatments, when to stop them, and how to die "well." Too often the choice of aggressive treatment and heroic measures becomes an extended "death by intensive care"' in grim hospital units designed more like prisons than places of healing. Thoughtful and compassionate, Martensen narrates poignant case studies, such as that of Marguerite, who undergoes ineffective surgeries and drug trials for advanced breast cancer but has debilitating side effects. The author lays blame across the board, from patients with unrealistic expectations and doctors who don't explain treatment options fully, from profit-driven hospitals to an insurance bureaucracy that spurns routine health maintenance. Martensen makes his case with clear, compelling writing that never flinches from his conclusion that some things you just can't "win the battle against"; you can only hope for quality of life until the end. Dana Ladd - Library Journal

Martensen (The Brain Takes Shape: An Early History), a physician, medical historian, and medical ethicist, reflects upon how patients confront illness in a time when so many treatment choices are available, incorporating stories of real patients he has encountered. He discusses one patient with advanced breast cancer who chooses aggressive treatment and lives her final time with harsh side effects, while another patient with advanced cancer chooses a less aggressive approach, "freeing himself" from the medical system and focusing on quality of life at the end. While Martensen does not prescribe an approach, his reflections on experiences show readers that a combination of high expectations from patients, new high-tech medical technology, and a lack of communication with doctors can lead to patients believing that they can win a battle with an advanced disease with aggressive treatment; yet, they may be sacrificing a higher quality of life in their last days. While this is a worthy read for anyone faced with a difficult diagnosis, the level of writing may be too complex for the average reader, making it inaccessible to some patients. Even so, recommended for most larger public libraries.

If the Buddha Came to Dinner: How to Nourish Your Body to Awaken Your Spirit

Author: Hale Sofia Schatz

"Imagine for a moment that the Buddha is coming to dinner. What would you prepare? Most likely you wouldn't run out for fast-food burgers and onion rings. Instead, you'd spend time shopping and cooking the freshest, most tasty, wholesome meal you could produce with your very own hands, in your very own kitchen.

Now, let's imagine that you too are a spiritual being-which you are!-what would you feed yourself?"(If the Buddha Came to Dinner)

Many people don't realize that the simple daily act of eating can be a profound catalyst for spiritual growth, from experiencing a renewed sense of vitality to living a richer and more satisfying life. That's because each time we eat we have the opportunity to pay attention, care for ourselves, and feed the real source of our hunger: our spirit. Nourishment isn't a fad diet but a lifelong journey, and Hale Sofia Schatz is the ideal guide. Gentle, wise, and humorous, she shows us how to feed our Buddha within. A perfect blend of inspirational guidance and practical suggestions, If the Buddha Came to Dinner includes guidelines for selecting vital foods, tips for keeping your energy balanced throughout the day, a cleansing program, and recipes to awaken your palate.

Hale Sofia Schatz, nourishment educator and consultant, has cultivated the vital correlation between nourishment, health, and spiritual awareness for more than 30 years. Schatz presents her nourishment training programs in academic, corporate, and public settings. She lives in the Boston area with her family. Shira Shaiman is a freelance writer and editor. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Cheryl Richardson

Schatz's profound approach to food and healing goes beyond the body to include our emotional and spiritual well-being . . .

Publishers Weekly

"Nourishment consultant" Schatz convincingly urges readers to eschew refined and processed foods and replace them with organic fruits, vegetables and lean proteins. Her "transformational nourishment" incorporates Japanese and Chinese medicine with philosophy, naturopathic nutrition and herbal medicine. The book's first section sets the mood, counseling readers on "coming home to your spirit" and explaining the semantic difference between "Eating" and "Feeding," leading into the more practical and enticing sections. Part two, "Nourishment as Daily Practice," explains the benefits of "vital essence foods": foods that are as close to the source as possible. Schatz advises readers to eat seasonal produce, since not adhering to nature's rhythms can throw a body out of balance. She describes in detail how to flush toxins out of the body by eating the right foods rather than fasting. Part three, "Awakening Your Spirit," lays out predictable advice on being conscious of what foods one introduces into the body and making eating a pleasant ritual. The final section presents healthy, simple, Asian-influenced recipes. Throughout the book, Schatz shares accounts from clients who changed their lives drastically just by changing their diets. There is an important, useful message at this book's core, and Schatz does offer a unique approach to nutrition. Unfortunately, readers must sort through a great deal of filler in order to get to it. Agent, Colleen Mohyde. (Mar. 17) Forecast: With advance praise from Jon Kabat-Zinn (Wherever You Go, There You Are) and Lama Surya Das (Awakening the Buddhist Heart), Schatz's book could attract spiritually-minded readers. The LCP Solution or Herbal Healing for Women

The LCP Solution: The Remarkable Nutritional Treatment for ADHD, Dyslexia, and Dyspraxia

Author: B Jacqueline Stordy PhD

This important new book documents a major breakthrough in the treatment of the three most widespread learning disabilities—ADHD, dyslexia, and dyspraxia ("clumsy child syndrome"). Although these conditions have reached epidemic proportions, treatment has been limited to ineffective behavioral therapies or the controversial prescription drug Ritalin. Now Dr. B. Jacqueline Stordy, a leading researcher in the field, reveals a stunning new treatment based on a simple nutritional supplement: LCP (long chain polyunsaturated fatty acids). The LCP Solution is the first book to describe this new natural treatment and to explain how children (and adults) can incorporate it into their daily lives.

As a member of a family with a long history of dyslexia, Dr. Stordy discovered in a pioneering experiment that dyslexic and dyspraxic children who began taking a dietary supplement consisting of LCP experienced dramatic transformations in the quality of their lives. At the same time, parallel studies conducted at Purdue University came up with similar results with children who had ADHD. The effect of this dietary supplement was nothing short of revolutionary: after only a few weeks, dyslexic and ADHD children became calmer, more focused, easier to teach, while dyspraxics improved significantly in dexterity and balance, showing markedly less anxiety.

In The LCP Solution, Dr. Stordy documents how this life-changing treatment came about and explains step-by-step how sufferers of each of the three major conditions can use it to change their lives at home, at school, and at work. Illuminating, vividly presented, and authoritative in its findings, this book will revolutionize our approach to learning disabilities. LCPs are natural, simple to use, and amazing in their benefits. If you or someone you love suffers from a learning disability, this book is essential reading.

Library Journal

The dramatic increase in learning disorders in children has prompted researchers to investigate underlying causes and try to identify effective, natural treatments. What they discovered is that people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), dyslexia, and dyspraxia all seem to have a defect in fatty acid metabolism, which can be treated with foods and supplements rich in long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPs). In this well-written book, British nutritionist Stordy clearly explains how LCPs are essential for proper brain development, why harmful fats have such a negative impact on brain function, and why the typical American diet is so deficient in the healthy fats found in cold-water fish and algae. Along with information about the latest scientific research and about strategies to help children cope with learning disorders, Stordy provides real-life stories of the dramatic results that have been achieved by adding supplements. Because LCPs are so crucial during pregnancy and childhood, Stordy also discusses the leading recommended brands of supplements currently available. Marcia Zimmerman's The A.D.D. Solution (LJ 7/99) also emphasizes the advantages of diet therapy over harmful medications like Ritalin, but Stordy focuses more cogently on "the single most important element in promoting a child's ability to overcome a learning disadvantage." Highly recommended for public, academic, and medical libraries.--Ilse Heidmann, San Marcos, TX Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Relearning to See or A Promise Kept

Relearning to See: Improve Your Eyesight -- Naturally!

Author: Thomas R Quackenbush

In this accessible presentation of the famous Bates method, Thomas R. Quackenbush (who teaches the Bates method in California and Oregon) describes how eyesight can improve naturally, at any age and regardless of heredity. This book is a wonderful tribute to the genius of Dr. Bates, who was a pioneer in discovering how vision becomes blurred and how it restores itself naturally to clarity and acuity. Now 80 years later, his findings and teachings remain light years ahead of our contemporaries. His approach to treating vision problems was truly holistic and the theme throughout this book is very much an extension of that holistic approach. Dr. Quackenbush is to be commended for his dedication in getting the truth out and keeping the torch burning in this "bible" on vision improvement.

The Essential Yoga Sutra or Baby Massage

The Essential Yoga Sutra: A New Translation and Commentary of Patanjali's Ancient Classic

Author: Geshe Michael Roach

The Yoga Sutra of Patanjali is a classic Sanskrit treatise consisting of 195 “threads,” or aphorisms, describing the process of liberation through yoga. Although little is known about Patanjali (most scholars estimate that he lived in India circa 200–300 b.c.), his writings have long been recognized as a vital contribution to the philosophy and practice of yoga. This new, expert translation of the original Sanskrit text of Patanjali’s best-known work presents his seminal ideas and methods in accessible, plain-language English.

Patanjali organized the sutra into four parts: Samadhi (absorption), Sadhana (practice), Vibhuti (supernatural powers), and Kaivalya (liberation). Each represents a step in breaking free of our limited definition of consciousness and training the mind to achieve oneness with the universe. Geshe Michael Roach, one of the most respected teachers of Tibetan Buddhism in America and a renowned scholar of Sanskrit, provides authoritative commentary on each of the sutras. His notes and clarification are straightforward and highly readable, untainted by obscure, academic terminology or New Age jargon. The first edition of the Yoga Sutra to present a Buddhist perspective, this paperback original will be welcomed by students and spiritual seekers alike.

Publishers Weekly

Patanjali's Yoga Sutra is a foundational ancient text that examines the purpose and practice of yoga. Longtime American Buddhist teacher Roach, who holds the distinguished title of geshe (comparable to a Ph.D. in Buddhist religious studies), provides commentary to McNally's fresh translation of this aphoristic text from ca. 250 B.C.E. Yoga means union, and this interpretation unites the ways of Buddhism and yoga, making it useful for students of either practice. Roach's commentary reveals the text's logic and organization, unpacking its density in 108 short sections, each devoted to a few lines of the text. An index of important ideas in the sutra is helpful. Like any classic sacred text, this one is deceptively simple, inviting study, as Roach notes ("Now that you've read this book, you need to use it"). The text is dense and the commentary short, so this is not a book for beginners. The subtitle is misleading: as how-to books go, this is fairly abstract ("Everything we see around us is either at work or at rest"), lacking real anecdotes or examples to illustrate ideas. But for more experienced students and those interested in the intersection between yoga and Buddhism, this is a stimulating presentation of an influential text. The Practice of Chinese Medicine or The Hardness Factor

The Practice of Chinese Medicine: The Treatment of Diseases with Acupuncture and Chinese Herbs

Author: Giovanni Maciocia

The new edition of this popular clinical text describes the application of traditional Chinese medical theory to the diagnosis and treatment of up to 48 diseases, conditions and disorders. In addition to the existing 34 covered in the first edition, 14 new conditions and symptoms have been added, and these include common, chronic and acute conditions which clinicians may see in their practice. Each chapter contains aetiology and pathology; differential diagnosis according to TCM; selection of treatments with acupuncture and herbs, with explanation of choices; case studies for illustration; summary of Western differential diagnosis; and discussion of prognosis and prevention. This book again brings the enormous wealth of the author's experience, and his insights in applying TCM medicine to a Western context, to the support of all clinicians whatever their own range of experiences.

The Alternate Day Diet or Fantastic Water Workouts 2nd Edition

The Alternate-Day Diet

Author: James B Johnson

Diet only half the time with this simple, safe, and science-based weight-loss program.

The Alternate-Day Diet is a revolutionary eating plan based on the animal studies documenting alternateday calorie restriction, which indicate that limiting caloric intake every other day can turn on the "skinny" gene (SIRT1). Applying this same model in humans, Dr. Johnson discovered that a similar cascade of positive effects occurs -reduced inflammation, lower free-radical stress, improved insulin resistance, and better cellular energy production, among others. Most important, it also promotes fat loss by releasing fat cells from around the body's organs.

But, perhaps, the most significant benefit for those who want to lose weight is that every-other-day calorie restriction eliminates feelings of chronic deprivation-the reason that most diets fail.

Easy-to-follow and scientifically sound, the diet is already a worldwide Internet phenomenon. And this book will provide Dr. Johnson's legion of followers-plus those new to the diet- with all the guidance and recipes they will need to make the diet work best.

Invisible Heroes: Survivors of Trauma and How They Heal

Author: Belleruth Naparstek

If you or someone you love has suffered a traumatic event, you know the devastating impact it can have on your life and your spirit. Life-threatening accidents, illnesses, assaults, abusive relationships—or a tragedy like 9/11—all can leave deep emotional wounds that persist long after physical scars have healed. Survivors become “invisible heroes,” courageously struggling to lead normal lives in spite of symptoms so baffling and disturbing that they sometimes doubt their own sanity.

Now there is new hope for the millions affected by posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Drawing on more than thirty years’ experience as a therapist and on the most recent cutting-edge research, Belleruth Naparstek presents a clinically proven program for recovery using the potent tool of guided imagery. She reveals how guided imagery goes straight to the right side of the brain, where it impacts the nonverbal wiring of the nervous system itself, the key to alleviating suffering.

Filled with the voices of real trauma survivors and therapists whose lives and work have been changed by this approach, Invisible Heroes offers:

• New understanding of the physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral effects of PTSD, who is most susceptible, and why symptoms can get worse rather than better with time

• Important insights into how the brain and body respond to trauma, why conventional talk therapy can actually impede recovery, and why the nonverbal, image-based right brain is crucial to healing

• A step-by-step program with more than twenty scripts for guided-imagery exercises tailored to the three stages of recovery, fromimmediate relief of anxiety attacks, flashbacks, nightmares, and insomnia, to freedom from depression and isolation, to renewed engagement with life

• A helpful guide to the best of the new imagery-based therapies, and how to incorporate them into an overall recovery plan

Belleruth Naparstek concludes with the inspiring words of survivors who have found their way back to peace, purpose, and
a deep joy in living. Her compassionate, groundbreaking book can lead you and
those in your care to the same renewal and healing.

Publishers Weekly

In the wake of 9/11, there was much media coverage of post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD-the long-term stress response whose symptoms include chronic pain, nightmares and panic attacks-and how to treat it. Naparstek, a therapist for more than 30 years, is an advocate of guided imagery, as opposed to talk therapy, and in this book she uses case histories to illustrate how it works; she also looks at recent research on the brain that shows why this method is effective and offers step-by-step instructions on using guided imagery, which she defines as "deliberate, directed daydreaming," for healing trauma. According to Naparstek, trauma damages the left brain, which is language oriented, and talking about the trauma can actually worsen symptoms. Imagery, on the other hand affects the right brain, the seat of the emotions. Guided imagery is "fast, powerful, costs little or nothing," says the author; it can be done alone or in groups, with the help of tapes that walk the stress victim through the process of finding images that help heal the trauma. Clinicians will find the entire book useful; people seeking help may not need explanations of the biochemical processes underlying PTSD, but will respond to Napartek's passionate advocacy of a simple, gentle healing method. (Aug.) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Licensed independent social worker Naparstek here expands on earlier work (Staying Well with Guided Imagery), assimilating 30 years' professional experience with recent research findings about guided imagery, a powerful trauma recovery tool. The opening chapters explain the physical and cognitive effects of trauma, its emotional and behavioral impact, and firsthand stories of patients who have lived through and continue to heal from traumatic episodes. Part 2 fully describes guided imagery, defined here as deliberate, directed daydreaming to create a mind-state ideal for catalyzing desired changes in mind, body, psyche, and spirit. Naparstek provides practical guided-imagery tactics for the three stages of trauma and explains how and why they work. Readers are shown why conventional talk therapy can actually impede recovery and why the nonverbal, image-based right brain is crucial to healing. Included are more than 20 scripts for guided-imagery exercises. While accessible to lay readers, the material will greatly benefit professionals; Naparstek carefully distinguishes between the professional use of guided imagery and the use of visualization, as covered in works by Shakti Gawain (e.g., Creative Visualization Meditations). Highly recommended. Dale Farris, Groves, TX Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

Healing Jewelry: Using Gemstones for Health and Well-Being

Author: Mickey Baskett

Have you ever been mysteriously drawn to a turquoise or amethyst bracelet, or chosen to wear the same amber necklace for weeks on end? Perhaps you intuitively recognized in those stones the power to heal an ailment or mood—a capacity that has been attributed to many gems for centuries. This approachable, illustrated guide outlines the beneficial properties ascribed to dozens of gems (for example, onyx is said to protect against negativity) and includes instructions for making more than 50 pieces of jewelry using healing stones. Stitch elegant branch earrings of coral and pearl (which reduces irritability), or an intricate citrine bracelet that will improve your disposition. Other projects include a rosary, prayer beads, and a beautiful “circle of life” brooch.

Constance Ashmore Fairchild <P>Copyright &copy; Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. - School Library Journal

Many people have jewelry pieces that function as sort of personal talismans for good luck or psychological well-being. Over time, a body of folk tradition has grown about the healing properties of gemstones apart from their natural beauty. Baskett (Dazzling Bead & Wire Crafts) summarizes this lore in her "Healing Properties of Stones" chapter. The jewelry projects by several designers incorporate these stones, but except for some using metal good luck charms, these are ordinary, attractive beaded jewelry pieces. The magic may be in the wearing. A good choice for collections needing more beading material.

Wisdom of Yoga or Aspergers and Girls

Wisdom of Yoga: A Seeker's Guide to Extraordinary Living

Author: Stephen Cop

For modern spiritual seekers and yoga students alike, here is an irreverent yet profound guide to the most sophisticated teachings of the yoga wisdom tradition–now brought to contemporary life by a celebrated author, psychotherapist, and leading American yoga instructor.

While many Westerners still think of yoga as an invigorating series of postures and breathing exercises, these physical practices are only part of a vast and ancient spiritual science. For more than three millennia, yoga sages systematically explored the essential questions of our human existence: What are the root causes of suffering, and how can we achieve freedom and happiness? What would it be like to function at the maximum potential of our minds, bodies, and spirits? What is an optimal human life?

Nowhere have their discoveries been more brilliantly distilled than in a short–but famously difficult–treatise called the Yogasutra. This revered text lays out the entire path of inner development in remarkable detail–ranging from practices that build character and mental power to the highest reaches of spiritual realization.

Now Stephen Cope unlocks the teachings of the Yogasutra by showing them at work in the lives of a group of friends and fellow yoga students who are confronting the full modern catastrophe of careers, relationships, and dysfunctional family dynamics. Interweaving their daily dilemmas with insights from modern psychology, neuroscience, religion, and philosophy, he shows the astonishing relevance and practicality of this timeless psychology of awakening.

Leavened with wit and passion, The Wisdom of Yoga is a superb companion and guide foranyone seeking enhanced creativity, better relationships, and a more ethical and graceful way of living in the world.

Publishers Weekly

Psychotherapist and longtime resident teacher at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, Mass., Cope applies the compassionate insights made in his book, Yoga and the Quest for the True Self, to this guide to the Yogasutra. Attributed to Patanjali, a second-century sage, the Yogasutra barely mentions the physical postures now identified as yoga. But the 196 trenchant entries, scholars say, contain the body of wisdom gleaned by those who sought, through direct experience, the inner workings of body, mind and spirit. This wisdom tradition (raja yoga), Cope says, is as effective today in diagnosing and healing "ordinary unhappiness" as it was centuries ago. Drawing parallels between ancient yogis and Buddhists and Western theologians, philosophers and poets, Cope argues that the yogis uncovered the roots of fear, illusion and self-deception. He focuses on the eight limbs of yoga (ethical behaviors, disciplines, postures, breathing practices, sense withdrawal, concentration, meditation and enlightenment) to demonstrate their effects in the lives of modern practitioners. Readers will readily identify with at least one of the challenges discussed -be they failed relationships, dysfunctional families, unrealized ambitions and compulsive behaviors. Beginners will find it helpful to read the Yogasutra, provided in an appendix, before diving into the personal stories and Cope's sympathetic commentaries. (June) Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Cope (Yoga and the Quest for the True Self) is a psychotherapist, a yoga teacher, and senior scholar in residence at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health in Lenox, MA. In this text, he takes on the challenge of interpreting for the Western world one of the most revered cornerstone writings of yoga tradition-the Yogasutra, which is more than 2000 years old. Cope narrates the experiences of five friends, each of whom comes to the study of yoga with certain struggles that highlight the key concepts of the Yogasutra. While the author warns us that the characters are composite figures, the reader is caught up in their development and growth throughout; their inclusion makes the more difficult and erudite theoretical discussions much easier to understand and assimilate. Interesting parallels are drawn between Western psychology and the Eastern philosophy of raja yoga, enhancing and easing the contemporary Western thinkers through the compact threads of the Yogasutra. Recommended for all libraries with interests in Eastern philosophies.-Crystal Renfro, Georgia Inst. of Technology, Lib. & Information Ctr., Atlanta Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.

The ADD Nutrition Solution or Homemade Baby Food Pure and Simple

The A.D.D. Nutrition Solution: A Drug-Free 30 Day Plan

Author: Marcia Zimmerman

From the Author

The Add Nutrition Solution: A Drug-Free Thirty-Day Plan is a compilation of medical research, nutritional counseling and parental wisdom - gained from years of successfully modifying children's hyperactivity and inability to concentrate - through dietary modification.

I first began applying nutritional principles when it was suggested our own sons were hyperactive and had learning and behavioral difficulties. We rejected the suggestion that medication was the answer and turned instead to dietary change. Behavior modification and change of schooling were later instituted to accommodate our young sons' difficulties. My further research into the diet/behavior/inattention connection was sparked some years later when I was working in biochemical research at Stanford University medical school in Palo Alto California. I undertook further study in nutritional biochemistry and gained certification in nutrition counseling.

That, in turn led to my work with hyperactive children which began in the late 1970's and proved to me that dietary modification can not only effect immediate change in behavior and learning, but has lasting effects. My early clients are now in their thirties and continue to benefit from these early changes. In the 1980's attention deficits were officially recognized and I began traveling throughout the U.S. training other nutritionists how to use dietary change to treat this condition. Along the way, I have personally counseled hundreds of children and adults, in making these life changing dietary modifications. Finally, I was persuaded by my professional colleagues to sit down and write The Nutrition Solution so that thousands could benefit from this simple easy- to-implement program. My research associates and I spent long hours collecting and analyzing the medical literature on the causes, outcomes and treatment options for AD/HD. It became our mission to bring together credible information that professionals, parents, educators and other adults can turn to for help in addressing the major underlying cause of this ever growing and distressing condition.

Nutrition-based therapies have been used effectively to treat a wide variety of health problems, ranging from PMS to cancer. In this helpful guide, clinical nutritionist Zimmerman discusses how diet therapy can provide long-term relief and even a cure for attention deficit disorder (ADD). During the past decade, the use of Ritalin, the drug most commonly prescribed for ADD, has risen 600 percent, but its effects are temporary and possibly harmful. Zimmerman's program for getting off medication involves eliminating allergic foods, additives, pollutants, and harmful fats and instead focusing on unprocessed, nutrient-rich meals supplemented with fatty acids, minerals, and vitamin co-enzymes. Her 30-day plan provides food charts and recipe ideas. This effective, natural approach, based on extensive research on the link between diet and brain function, will be greatly appreciated by parents of children diagnosed with ADD. Highly recommended for public libraries.--Ilse Heidmann, San Marcos, TX Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

The first scientifically proven, effective, all-natural nutritional alternative to the much-prescribed drug Ritalin Attention deficit disorder is a nutritional deficiency, not a psychological condition. That conclusion led her to develop a diet that addresses the specific needs of the 17 million adults and children suffering from ADD. Her easy-to-follow thirty-day plan has been proven just as effective as Ritalin in relieving the symptoms of ADD. Learn:

Teaching Motor Skills to Children With Cerebral Palsy and Similar Movement Disorders: A Guide for Parents and Professionals

Author: Sieglinde Martin

While most families of young children with cerebral palsy and similar conditions work in conjunction with a physical therapist a few times a week, it takes daily intervention to help a child reach his motor potential and become more independent.

TEACHING MOTOR SKILLS is the resource that parents, therapists, and other caregivers can consult to help children with gross motor delays learn and practice motor skills outside of therapy sessions. Written by an experienced physical therapist who is also the mother of a child with cerebral palsy, this comprehensive guide examines the physical characteristics of cerebral palsy and similar conditions--muscle tightness and weakness, increased or decreased flexibility, abnormal reflexes, impaired sensory perception--that affect a child's ability to sit, crawl, stand, and walk. TEACHING MOTOR SKILLS offers dozen of easy-to-follow exercises with accompanying photos that parents may incorporate into many daily routines at home with the guidance and support of their child's physical therapist. Exercises address:
Head control;
Protective reactions;
Proper positioning;
Independent sitting with and without arm support;
Transitional movements;
Daily stretching;
Improving muscle strength and coordination;
Balance training;

Animal Liberation or Eat Taste Heal

Animal Liberation

Author: Peter Singer

The Book That Started A Revolution

Since its original publication in 1975, this groundbreaking work has awakened millions of concerned men and women to the shocking abuse of animals everywhere -- inspiring a worldwide movement to eliminate much of the cruel and unnecessary laboratory animal experimentation of years past.

In this newly revised and expanded edition, author Peter Singer exposes the chilling realities of today's "factory forms" and product-testing procedures -- offering sound, humane solutions to what has become a profound environmental and social as well as moral issue. An important and persuasive appeal to conscience, fairness, decency and justice, Animal Liberation is essential reading for the supporter and the skeptic alike.

Library Journal

``The modern animal rights movement may be dated to the 1975 publication of Animal Liberation by Australian philosopher Peter Singer,'' declared Newsweek of the first edition, and this ``bible'' for animal rights activists has just undergone a second edition. Singer continues his ``blistering indictment of so-called humane use of animals in scientific research'' ( LJ 12/1/75), describes the current (and still atrocious) state of animal testing, and brings up to date the activities of the animal rights movement, nascent at the time of the first edition's release. This is a necessary purchase for any animal rights collection. See also Heidi J. Eat Taste Heal: An Ayurvedic Cookbook for Modern Living

Author: Thomas Yarema

Eat Taste Heal is a groundbreaking work within the field of holistic health and nutrition, written by a medical doctor, a patient, and an acclaimed chef. A complete guidebook and cookbook in one, Eat Taste Heal demystifies the ancient healing science of Ayurveda, humankind's most ancient system of healthy living. The aim of the book is simple: to create harmony within through using common foods and healthy lifestyle practices as medicine. The collection contains over 150 cross-cultural recipes and received a Maverick Award for excellence in photography.

The authors are a unique trio: physician, patient, and chef. Dr. Thomas Yarema M.D., director of the Kauai Center for Holistic Medicine and Research, created for his patients an understandable dietary program rooted in common sense. Daniel Rhoda, a patient who found healing through Ayurveda, demystifies the ancient science that helped restore his health. Chef Johnny Brannigan, an internationally trained Ayurvedic chef, has created more than 150 recipes to empower individual healing through the exploration of taste.

Publishers Weekly

Holistic physician Yarema, patient Rhoda and chef Brannigan contribute their individual perspectives on India's ancient medical science, ayurveda, to this attractive volume. Introduced to the system by different routes (disillusionment with Western medical practices, illness and transcendental meditation, respectively), the authors detail an array of ayurvedic techniques (diet, breathing, meditation, exercise, aromatherapy). Much more than a cookbook, this guide can serve as a complete introduction to ayurveda. Readers will learn how to identify their ayurvedic type; detect and treat imbalances and illness; select foods, daily routines and activities best for them; adapt to seasonal and aging patterns; and, most importantly, put the power to heal in their own hands. Based on cuisines from around the globe, the recipes demonstrate how to vary ayurvedic meals to nurture each of the ayurvedic types. The tempting selections include Roasted Sunflower Pate, Gnocchi with Pumpkin Sauce, Seared Sesame Trout with Coconut Curry Sauce, and Mango and Passion Fruit Cheesecake. The recipes are easy to follow and require little preparation time. The authors stress that adopting an ayurvedic lifestyle requires time, commitment and much self-inquiry, but make an enthusiastic and persuasive case for doing so. Color photos. Real Men Do Yoga or The Science of Sexy

Real Men Do Yoga: 21 Star Athletes Reveal Their Secrets for Strength, Flexibility and Peak Performance

Author: John Capouya

With its revolutionary approach to yoga and innovative, male-oriented instruction, Real Men Do Yoga will be the definitive guide for both novice and veteran men who are discovering the innumerable physical and mental benefits of yoga.

Satisfying the male fascination with sports and admiration for athletes are interviews with more than twenty pros, all of whom are enthusiastic yoga practitioners: football's Eddie George, Shannon Sharpe and Amani Toomer; baseball pitchers Barry Zito (2002 Cy Young Award winner) and Al Leiter, star hockey goalie Sean Burke and NBA superstar Kevin Garnett as well as pro golfers and tennis players.

Photos of sports stars doing yoga, such as football greats Dan Marino and Chris Carter, drive home a powerful message. Each chapter offers a combination of stretches and strength-builders that target and benefit specific areas:

  • Conquering back pain (which afflicts an estimated 10 million men)
  • Improving sports performance including yoga for golf, running, basketball, tennis and more
  • Increasing flexibility in the upper body, spine and lower body
  • Building muscle strength
  • Improving sexual performance

In a sea of yoga books aimed at women, Real Men Do Yoga is an easily accessible, "non-New Agey" guidebook that takes something mysterious to American men and offers a reassuringly effective and practical guide that they'll actually use.

Yoga Journal

This may be the world's most in-your-face yoga guide ... You won't find anything about the yamas of niyamas here, but you just might interest that Gatorade-slammin' fella of yours in accompanying you to class after he peruses this X-Games - esque volume.

GQ Magazine

A book for those seeking a more macho road to enlightenment.

Publishers Weekly

This is an excellent introduction to yoga for men, although sportswriter Capouya is a little too concerned about reminding his male readers that yoga "isn't a chick thing." By keeping his book's focus on "yoga's fantastic physical and mental benefits, without getting into the more cosmic stuff," Capouya shows what yoga enthusiasts have known for years-that yoga is a "complex, sophisticated exercise system" that can be used to increase flexibility, build muscle energy and functional strength and help prevent sports injuries. The clever thing about this book is that it takes traditional and well-known yoga moves such as the Cobra, the Cat Stretch and the Eagle along with other basic yoga breathing techniques, and shows how they can fit into other body-building programs such as weight-lifting for better overall result. But the book's subtitle is a bit misleading. The book does feature short and direct page-long testimonials by "yoga jocks" like pitcher Al Leiter, as well as comments by other pros such as golfer David Duval and star running back Eddie George ("Yoga definitely builds strength. I've noticed it mostly in my upper body"), whose well-chiseled frame is featured on the cover in a yoga position. But the book's strength is its easy-to-handle introductory program of yoga techniques that can be applied to existing workouts for any other sport. (Oct.) Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Using as examples male sport celebrities who condition and train with yoga, including Eddie George, Barry Zito, and Kevin Garnett, Capouya (deputy editor, SmartMoney magazine) attempts to dispel common misconceptions about men and yoga by outlining the practice's "fantastic physical and mental benefits, without getting into the more cosmic stuff." After briefly covering the basics, Capouya then presents exercise progressions (yoga poses and positions) for flexibility, muscle strength, core body strength, back pain, specific sports, relaxation, and sex. Each exercise comes with step-by-step instructions, illustrations, and an explanation why that particular exercise or group of exercises is beneficial. The author presents these exercises in a logical progression that not only makes sense to readers but also involves them in performing the exercises before having to finish the book. While aimed at reluctant males, this well-organized and engagingly written book would certainly be instructional for anyone. Recommended for public libraries, consumer health libraries, and universities with physical education majors.-Howard Fuller, Stanford Health Lib., Palo Alto, CA Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.

The Science of Sexy: Dress to Fit Your Unique Figure with the Style System that Works for Every Shape and Size

Author: Bradley Bayou

A celebrity fashion designer gives every woman the red-carpet treatment in this foolproof guide to choosing clothes that make you look fabulous-with tailor-made tips for forty-eight body types.

The average American woman is 5"4' tall, weighs 160 pounds, wears a size 14, and bears no resemblance to the typical runway model. Yet the runway model sets the standard for "ideal" wardrobes. Top L.A. designer Bradley Bayou has dressed women of all shapes and sizes and knows that every woman has her own natural combination of silhouette shape, height, and weight. Style is not about fitting into the size you think is sexy, it is about picking clothes that fit your body correctly and that create balance. Perfect balance is perfect style.

In The Science of Sexy, Bayou helps readers identify their silhouette shape (triangle, inverted triangle, rectangle, or hourglass) and combines that information with a height/weight chart to determine which of forty-eight "fitting rooms" to go to in the book. Each fitting room has Bradley's specific advice for that woman on the clothes and accessories to wear and avoid, and how to create balance using color, scale, proportions, and fabric.

With a fabulous design and instructive and fun four-color illustrations throughout, The Science of Sexy takes the fear out of shopping and gives all women the gift of confidence that they deserve.
